SOP for Requesting to Close CRA Business Account by Mail

To request the closure of your business account with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), you generally need to complete Form RC145, Request to Close Business Number (BN) Accounts.

Here are the steps to complete Form RC145:


Obtain the Form:

You can download Form RC145 from the CRA's official website or request a copy by calling the Business Enquiries line at 1-800-959-5525.

Complete the Form:

Provide all the required information on the form, including your business name, business number, the type of account(s) you want to close, and the reason for the closure. Make sure to specify the effective date of the closure.

Sign and Date:

Send the form to the Client for signature.

Please note, only an authorized individual can sign the form. CRA will not process the request if the individual who signed the form is not listed with signing authority in CRA’s records.

Prepare a Letter:

Include a letter on a company letterhead explaining the reason for closure and outline the documentation enclosed. Refer to the below “Letter Template” for guidance on preparing the letter.

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to formally request the closure of the business account associated with [Business name] and its corresponding Business Number [Business number] with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

[Business name] has made the decision to close their business operations in Canada, and as a result, the company will no longer require an active business account with the CRA. We have fulfilled all our tax obligations up to the current date, and all outstanding taxes, if any, have been settled.

To facilitate the closure process, we have attached the necessary documentation to this letter.

Please find enclosed the following documents:

Submit the Form:
